October is Bat Appreciation Month, and on Saturday, Oct. 25, from noon to 5 p.m., Cincinnati’s Maple Ridge Lodge will host the 2025 Ohio Bat Fest. The event is being coordinated by University of Cincinnati researcher Joe Johnson and postdoctoral fellow Missy Meierhofer

The University of Cincinnati has joined a national program aimed at strengthening mental health support for college students, becoming an official JED Campus as part of the university’s long-standing commitment to supporting student well-being. The JED Campus program, developed by the nonprofit Jed Foundation, helps colleges and universities evaluate and enhance their mental health, substance misuse, and suicide prevention efforts. The initiative guides schools through a four-year strategic process to build comprehensive systems of care.

Joe Johnson is an assistant professor in the School of Information Technology and noted bat ecologist. He joined the School of Information Technology faculty in 2022, focusing on research that explores the intersection of technology and ecology. In this episode, Johnson tells us how he first developed his interest in bats, shares about some of the cool technological products and solutions he’s employing in his conservation research about bats, and discusses some of the work being done by the Ohio Bat Lab, a research team he leads focused on mammal ecology and conservation.
